How To Backup Your Skype History Files

March 6th, 2008 · 103 Comments · Skype Tips

Here’s the latest information I received from Skype tech support.

Windows XP

The procedure for backing up your history files on a Windows XP machine is the following:

Locate the folder “Application Data\Skype\<your username>” and copy it to another location such as a CD or DVD-ROM.

To restore the history files just copy the files back to that folder.

These files are stored as .dbb files and can only be read with Skype itself. Unfortunately you cannot recover from a corrupt history file.

Be aware that the above files contain all of your chat room history files. You cannot save separate chat room history using that method.

If you want to preserve the history of one specific chat for reading it later, type “/htmlhistory” (without the quotes) into the chat text area and press enter. The entire chat history will open in an internet browser. You can save it for reviewing later by selecting “File > Save Page As”.

how about on a Mac OS 10.5.5 or 10.3.9? is there anything for Macs?

  • 5 Jerry Leventer // Jan 21, 2009 at 1:14 am

I don’t know Mac’s as well as Windows, but you should be able to search your system files for /skype/.

  • 6 snoopy // Feb 28, 2009 at 6:47 am

i’ve copied the folder “Application Data\Skype\” and replaced my new skype folder but there is no history.
when i type in /htmlhistory the browser shows the message ‘You have no chat history with “name” ‘
what’s wrong? how can i get my old history?

  • 7 snoopy // Feb 28, 2009 at 7:12 am

ok, the problem is solved :)

  • 8 Jerry Leventer // Mar 1, 2009 at 7:10 pm

I’m glad you were able to resolve the issue, Snoopy. Skype developers live in a dark cave on a deserted island and they don’t seem to understand how important the history mechanism is to their users.

Have you installed Skype v4.0 yet? I heard it may not support group chat where you can invite others to join. I am reluctant to upgrade without finding this out first.

  • 9 Snoopy // Apr 1, 2009 at 10:20 am

How did you solve your problem? I am having same issue here trying to restore chat history from my previous pc but without success. I have copied the skype folder (ApplicationData/Skype) and replaced the file in new computer and nothing happens. Please advise. Thank you!!

    hi there!
i have my gf’s user name and password of skype. but i am unable to see the chat history because we are using different computers. is it possible to get the history from the skype server?

  • 11 Jerry Leventer // Apr 14, 2009 at 4:58 pm

Unfortunately, if you don’t save the history on your own computer, you won’t be able to access them. The server erases the files after about 15 minutes. That’s the time during which you can edit a post in your common window. If it is a group room, you have about 1 or 2 hours in which to edit a post (yours or another member, if you are the creator).

If she can zip the entire folder, and send it to you, you may be able to recover her history files that way. But you’d have to be sure not to corrupt your current account files. It would be best to make a full backup copy of YOUR files and save them to a CD-ROM or other drive or partition. Be careful, and make backups that you know how to restore.

  • 12 Archernar // Apr 23, 2009 at 1:28 pm

Hi there, i got a little problem: i used an older skype version and had to reinstall my windows. Now i use version 4.00.??? and have saved my old skype folders to have the chat history files. There was a folder called “skypePM” where files like “2009-03-11-2.ezlog” lay. With my version now, there isn’t any folder “skypePM” anymore and i even don’t know, if these files are my history. what is more, the command /htmlhistory doesn’t work for me… dunno why, but when i type it in some chat window, just nothing happens… maybe i do smth wrong :-(
    hope you can help me.

  • 13 swea // Apr 27, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Archernar, the same happenig for me..

  • 14 Jerry Leventer // Apr 28, 2009 at 11:02 am

Unfortunately, I have not had the time to look into your issue, Archernar. Honestly, I haven’t even upgraded to 4.0 yet. I’m still using and old version of Skype 3.8 because I heard of some issues with 4.0 – what you are saying is just one more reason I don’t want to upgrade.

Try uninstalling 4.0 and re-installing 3.8. After uninstalling, (if on a Windows PC) you may want to clean your registry. (I use PC Tools Registry Mechanic.)

You can get a download of Skype Older Version 3.8 here:

what about windows vista? is it a safe way?

  • 16 Jerry Leventer // May 8, 2009 at 11:42 am

Andrew – I’m not sure I understand your question. Nonetheless, I have not been running Windows Vista, so I can’t comment on it. I’m sticking with Windows XP for as long as possible, until the next generatiion operating system from Microsoft will be available.

  • 17 Thomas // May 17, 2009 at 8:49 pm

I am unable to find the application data folder! There are no users set up on my Windows XP. My OS is on the C drive, but when I go to the Documents and Settings folder, I don’t see the username file or the application data folder. I tried to search for all skype files, but the results don’t show any file that has an application data folder in the path. What is the extn of the file I am looking for? HELP!!

  • 18 Jerry Leventer // May 17, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Thomas, the file extension you might look for on your C: drive is, *.dbb. On my version 3.8, this includes files such as the following: chat256.dbb, chat512.dbb, chatmsg512.dbb, etc.

I’m glad that worked for you.

  • 22 Apo // Jun 1, 2009 at 1:43 am

If you open a DBB file with Notepad, you can partially read it. That’s why, for example when ypu have worked at some place for some time, and have used skype there, be sure to copy (if you want) and then DELETE the folder with your skype name!!!

  • 23 John // Jun 2, 2009 at 10:24 am

I am trying to recover the history from my old skype account because I forgot the password. I tried copying the all the files from the folder with my old login name to the folder with my new login name. When I log in, I have all of my contacts, but no history. I tried /htmlhistory, but it tells me there is none.

    Anything else I can try?

  • 25 Mike // Jul 7, 2009 at 12:05 pm

Hi, I’ve a problem – tried to find Application Data\Skype\, but I’m working in Safe Mode in XP … nor //htmlhistory
It seems all my history remained somehow in to normal mode. No *.dbb files?
    Can anyone help me?

  • 26 Jerry Leventer // Jul 7, 2009 at 9:07 pm

Mike, what version of Skype are you using? 4.0 no longer allows the /htmlhistory command. You should have no problem finding files in XP Safe Mode. Try looking in a different /user/ account, or look in /All Users/.

Hi I have 2 laptops and an iPhone and I wanted to know if you could see the old chat history from 3 weeks from the PC on the iPhone if I downloaded the app for Skype right now? Or would it be completely empty on my iPhone?

  • 28 Jerry Leventer // Jul 28, 2009 at 10:57 am

It would be empty unless you copy the history files from the PC to the iPhone.

  • 34 Boyana // Jan 4, 2010 at 2:34 pm

Hey! I’m using an iphone and pretty much all the chat history disappears after just a little bit . The problem came when it turned out the other person was not even getting the messages I sent when they were offline.
Does anyone have more experience with skype on iPhone? Is there a way to keep the chronology on the phone or that’s only for comp?
    P.S. Tried the /htmlhistory and didn’t work :(((

  • 35 Jerry Leventer // Jan 4, 2010 at 3:54 pm

    Hi Boyana,

You know, I don’t even own an iPhone (yet?) so I can’t help you with that.

As far as I know, /htmlhistory only works up to skype version 3.8 . However, there is a way to get it to work with 4.x but it’s rather complicated. I may write a post on it at some point. But it probably won’t help you if your iphone isn’t even keeping a history at all.

  • 36 Mark // Jan 17, 2010 at 9:57 am

Hi, I am having trouble locating the Application Data folder on my Windows XP. Could you tell me exactly where it is? Thank you!

  • 46 Elmeditatore // Mar 7, 2010 at 5:12 pm

    Hey folks,

here’s how to copy your entire saved Skype history over from Windows XP to Windows 7 (might work for Windows Vista as well).

Copy your Skype-account folder (which I’m just gonna call here), including all its content from:

    “\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Skype\”

And voila! Using Skype 4.x, it worked perfectly. I just had to figure out the above path today, and thought that I might be able to help others who are having the same problem by posting it here.

    Good luck! :)

  • 47 Elmeditatore // Mar 7, 2010 at 5:15 pm

Correction, the above posting screwed up the path. Here’s the correct one:

Copy your Skype-account folder (which I’m just gonna call *your username* here), including all its content from:

“*System hard drive, likely C:*\Documents and Settings\*Windows Username, likely Administrator*\Application Data\Skype\*your username*”

“*System hard drive, likely C:*\Users\*Windows username*\AppData\Roaming\Skype\*your username*”

I hope this works! Sheesh! :)

  • 49 Jerry Leventer // Apr 27, 2010 at 2:23 pm

FCA, did you locate your “Application Data” folder, yet?

In your Windows “My Computer” navigate to the “C” drive. Then look for “Documents and Settings”.

You may have several users on your machine, including “All Users”, so you’ll need to find the correct one.

But each one will look like this: “C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Application Data\”

  • 50 jonrichco // Apr 30, 2010 at 4:33 pm

The best option to this that I can think of is to install skype in your data partition (or in My Documents if you don’t have a separate data partition). That way, when you back up your data, you will automatically back up all your skype chats. When you reinstall your OS, or move to a new computer, your data should not be affected and your skype and its chat history should be exactly as it was when you last used it. Incidentally, I do the same with Firefox, which backs up your bookmarks, history etc.

Your solution worked perfectly. I am using Skype 4.x . Mine is vista to Win 7. Many Thanks!

  • 63 Rian // Feb 2, 2011 at 10:48 pm

For those of you looking for your Application Data folder and not finding it – that folder is often hidden. Try this (instructions for WinXP; no idea about Win7. Vista? We don;t talk about Vista *heh*): in Control Panel, double click Folder Options, then click the View tab. Underneath ‘Hidden files and folders’ click the bullet for ‘Show hidden files and folders’ then click Apply and OK. Be careful once you do this! All of your files, including important OS files, will be visible (and deletable!), so don’t mess with what you’re not sure of.

Now, a question of my own. What file, exactly, stores the old chat history? I had a problem where Windows would shut down skype on login connection. I removed, reinstalled (rolled back to an earlier version), but no history, and when I copy the entire app data folder, it shuts down on me again. I can copy the config and pictures just fine, so I’m thinking one file may be corrupt or something, and if I can copy just the history data where it needs to go I’ll be fine. So what file am I looking for, for the text chats/ messages?

  • 64 jabalong // Feb 28, 2011 at 6:39 pm

Jerry, did you ever post your more complicated way of saving a chat history (since the /htmlhistory command no longer works after version 3.8). Please provide to it or post the info if you haven’t already. Thanks!

  • 65 fedya // Mar 15, 2011 at 8:18 am

If you want to save your skype video and audio and have all story of your skype chat – use IMCapture for Skype recorder. Nice programm!

  • 66 Mat // Mar 15, 2011 at 6:01 pm

“/htmlhistory” does absolutely nothing for me in Skype. Nothing opens up and nothing happens.

I am running skype on Win7

  • 67 Jerry Leventer // Mar 16, 2011 at 3:24 pm

That is correct. That metacommand ( /htmlhistory ) was obliterated by the skype developers after version 3.8. There may be other options for saving your history in the newer versions, but I have not yet investigated them due to other projects requiring my time. Please give us an update here if you find out anything.

  • 68 Xdude // Mar 18, 2011 at 2:01 pm

For those who like to read & back up skype history, i suggest this free tool.

SkypeLogView v1.21 (.dbb and main.db files)

    (c) 2008 – 2011 Nir Sofer

  • 69 Jerry Leventer // Mar 18, 2011 at 2:16 pm

    Thanks for your suggestion.

At first glance, I don’t think this grabs the actual skype history. Rather, it seems to grab the log files which are a bit different.

SkypeLogView reads the log files created by Skype application, and displays the details of incoming/outgoing calls, chat messages, and file transfers made by the specified Skype account. You can select one or more items from the logs list, and then copy them to the clipboard, or export them into text/html/csv/xml file.

Hi, I was wondering why when I use skype from 1 pc I see the full chat history, but from another pc I cannot.

I was under the assumption that once a party was online the chat history should sync from their pc to mine???

    Whoever posted originaly, good work

Hi last couple of people commenting

If u dont understand the first stages or its not working :( This is for you

    Skype 1
I want to see chat history on another Pc or for backup / restore purposes. Copy the Directory/folder (operating system may vary) c:\document and settings\myusername\Application Data\Skype\myusername\

Simply Put, If your using Windows Xp, Vista or 7. Click Start and click on run. In the box Type %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Skype\ Then RIGHT click on the folder which has your skype name, eg. myname and COPY it. Go to when you want to safely store your skype chat history for further use. Right click and PASTE.
You should end up with a folder called myusername or what ever your name is. Go inside it and you should see about 6 folders and other files.
    There you go sorted.
To restore the files, install skype on new pc and login with same skype name, then quit skype. click start run. type %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Skype\ Copy and psting your backup folder here. Foldername overwriting folder name.

    Cheers dave

Skype history chat is formated when my system was formated. My friend gave me his all skype backup. How would i now that which “.dbb” file is to be copied in my skype folder. So that i could see history chat which were chated with my friend.

  • 83 Jerry Leventer // Aug 5, 2011 at 10:33 pm

Kuber, what version of Skype were you using when those backups were made?

If it was an older version, be sure to install that version when you swap the files. You can upgrade after you get it sorted out.

Unfortunately, the Skype developers did not make it easy to find any particular Skype chat in the backup files, unless this has changed in later versions.

You might want to search the Web for keywords such as, “Skype Database Reader”.

I’m not sure what you mean? Call details should be found under the Skype main window history tab. If you are trying to extract those details from the database files themselves, I don’t know how to do that. Skype does not allow users easy access to that data.

Can anybody offer me any suggestions to recover my Skype account. I lost my password and my email address has changed. I need to also try to recover some messages history. Oddly my Skype account still fires up when I log in to my system. Thanks.

There is a simple utility to backup Skype chats:

    Thanks for that.

    Hi Jerry,

Would you happen to know if there’s a way to store (group) chat history online? Me and my coworkers would like to be able to search for specific keywords when someone wants to know about certain topics discussed in the past.

I’ve been searching my @$$ off, but no online service seems to provide what we need. Please help!

There is probably a way to create custom code for storing and searching chat history. Here’s a link to the Skype API and Development Kit –

If you want to hire me to do a custom app for you, let me know. Or you might be able to hire someone on one of the coders-for-hire sites.

How to remove a Skype message from your system: Not an easy thing to do.

When you first send a message to someone in one of your Skype chats, that message is stored on a Skype server and on your machine in the data files (c:..\Documents and Settings\..). After a certain time, that message is removed from the Skype server, but it still resides on your machine. It will also reside on the machine(s) of anyone else who received that message from you. It is not possible for you to remove it from other people’s hard drives. While you can remove it from your own hard drive, there really is no point since no one else can read it. If you want to remove it from your own drive, you must find the text string in the database file(s) where Skype stores that information.

    Skype Historian Update:

As far as I can tell, Skype Historian does not allow you to recover your history files in a way that they can be viewed in your Skype chats. In other words, it does not provide full backup and restore functionality.

Skype Historian only saves your Skype chats in various other readable formats such as .txt, .csv (Excel), JSON, and XML.

Hi I too have accidently deleted Skype chat history, but have followed your instructions and found the files in .dbb format in the skype roaming folder. How do I then, a non IT whizz, read/restore these??Have tried various methods of reading them through Skype view/SQ Lite manager etc from other blogs on same subject on the internet, but no joy, its all garbage and not real words….. do i need to hire someone technical to do this?! I am using Skype 5 I think and am on the same PC I was using when I deleted the chat. Any help appreciated, thanks !

  • 99 Jerry Leventer // Apr 13, 2012 at 8:45 pm

You may need to be running the same version of Skype as when the recovered .dbb history files were created.

Before making any changes, be sure to BACKUP your current .dbb files, if there is important data in them.

Uninstall the newer version of Skype, and reinstall the original version you were running if necessary.

Then overwrite the history files in the reinstall with the files you had previously recovered.

If that simple procedure doesn’t work for you, then you may need to hire someone to do it.
